5 Reasons Why Your Cough Isn’t Going Away

A typical cough or one that is associated with a cold or flu can last from 14 to 18 days. A cough caused by a viral illness, on the other hand, may persist even longer; it may take you eight weeks to recover from it.

However, there are instances where you may not see any improvement in your cough within the expected period. Failing to drink the right cough medication may be one reason. When you take medicine that does not treat your particular symptoms, you won’t get well.

Additionally, if you don’t follow the recommended cough syrup dosage or take your medicine as prescribed, your chances of recovering quickly from your illness will be lower.

Aside from drinking the wrong medicine or taking it incorrectly, there are other reasons that may cause your cough to persist longer than expected. Once you avoid or stop doing these things, you will notice an improvement in your condition. You will get rid of your cough faster as well.

Below are some of the common reasons why your cough may not be improving:

  1. Eating lots of fried, fatty foods

When food is deep-fried in hot oil, they produce acrolein, a compound that acts as an allergen. This substance can irritate the throat and aggravate coughing.

If you have been eating too much fried chicken, French fries, and other fatty fare while you have a cold or cough, you will be hacking a lot. To avoid the discomfort and inconvenience that comes with continuous coughing, stay away from oily foods for now.

While you are sick, it is best to consume more nutritious foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. They will boost your immune system and help you recover faster.

2. Consuming cold foods and beverages

Although it has not yet been scientifically proven that cold or frozen foods and drinks can trigger or aggravate coughs, many doctors recommend that their patients avoid them until they get better.

This is because cold foods and beverages such as ice cream, milkshakes, and frappes can cause the respiratory lining to dry out. This will make the lungs and throat more susceptible to infection. It can also trigger frequent coughing due to irritation

If you have been continuously eating cold or frozen foods and drinking frosty beverages since you got a cough, avoid them for now. Once you do, you will see an improvement in your condition.

3. Not drinking enough water

Staying hydrated is crucial if you are sick. It is also doubly important if you are coughing a lot.

By drinking more water, you help loosen the mucus in your airways. This will enable you to cough it out more easily. With the phlegm out of your lungs and throat, your hacking will be reduced.

Consuming more clear broths or soups will help you stay hydrated while you have a cough, cold, or flu as well. However, avoid drinking alcoholic and caffeinated beverages since they will only irritate your throat and aggravate your condition.

4. Constant exposure to smoke and other irritants

Smoking and using tobacco products are the leading causes of a cough due to bronchitis.

Tobacco irritates the throat lining, thereby causing you to cough. Smoking also delays your recovery and heightens your risk of cancer. Constant exposure to secondhand smoke does nothing good for your cough and overall health as well.

Additionally, dust, smoke, fumes, and other allergens such as pollen and dust mites also irritate the throat. As such, they can also worsen your cough.

To speed up your recovery and reduce your coughing fits, stop smoking. Avoid going to places where you can be exposed to smoke, dust, and other irritants as well. In case you need to go to these areas, wear a face mask.

5. Insufficient sleep and rest

Finally, to have a healthy immune system and body, you need to get plenty of sleep and rest every day.

Get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night, and try to squeeze in some rest periods during the day as well. Additionally, avoid any strenuous activities, including vigorous workouts and doing physically taxing chores such as carrying heavy loads. 

Keep in mind that coughing is a sign that there is something wrong with your body. Because of this, it is crucial that you give your body sufficient time to rest and recover.  

If you have avoided all these things and made the necessary changes in your diet and lifestyle but have not noticed any improvement in your cough, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
